How to Tie a Quick Release Cattle Rope Knot

When leading livestock by a lead and halter, a quick release knot can allow you to securely tie the animal up to a post, rail or ring, preventing your bull, cow or steer from wandering off. If the animal pulls on the long potion of the rope the knot it will only become tighter, holding your livestock firmly in place. When the time comes to move again, the knot easily comes loose with just a quick tug on the tag end of the knot. This knot works equally well for other livestock, including horses, mules, ponies, goats and sheep.

Wrap the end of the rope lead around the post or rail. Wrap the tag end of the rope behind the long portion of the rope one complete turn.

Fold the tag end of the rope back on itself to form a flattened loop. Slip a short length of the loop through the turn you made around the long portion of the rope.

    • 3

Grasp the knot with one hand and pull the long portion of the rope with the other to tighten the knot. Insert the tag end of the rope through the loop in the tag end to prevent the knot from coming undone.

Pull the tag end of the rope out of the loop in the tag end and give the rope a quick jerk to untie the knot.
