How to Milk a Dexter Cow

The Dexter cow is among the smallest true breeds of cattle -- it is not a miniature version of another breed -- and is on average only 36 to 44 inches tall, to the shoulder. This means it is suitable for a small farm, or for those wanting to keep cattle as a hobby. To keep your Dexter cow comfortable, she should be milked twice a day until her milk dries up, at the same times each day.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie your Dexter cow securely with the halter and lead rope.

    • 2

Place your stool in position next to your cow and sit down. You should do this on the same side each time, as your cow will be used to it and will feel more comfortable.

    • 3

Wash the underside and udders of your cow with a cloth or paper towel and the warm water. This will stop any debris falling into the milk. Dry your cow's udders carefully with a clean, dry cloth or a fresh paper towel. Wash your own hands.

    • 4

Place the empty pail under your cow's udders.

    • 5

Grasp one of your cow's teats with your thumb and forefinger at the top. Squeeze down with each following finger in turn, then release the teat.

    • 6

Repeat Step 5 on each teat until the milk starts to slow. When you have got the hang of it, you'll be able to use both hands and milk two teats at once.
