How to Attach a Perch to a Chicken Coop

Building a roost for your chickens will make them happier birds, which in turn makes them more productive birds. A roost can be made of anything that a chicken can perch on. An old tree branch is one of the best perches and provides a more natural setting for your chickens. Chickens like to perch off the ground because it comes natural to them, it protects them from parasites and it keeps them from lying in feces. Providing perches will also keep your chickens from sleeping in their nesting boxes, which should be used only for egg laying.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space where you expect to install your perch. Install the perch in the highest spot possible or the chickens will not sleep on them.

    • 2
Dead trees provide good sources for perch material.

Find a sturdy tree branch that is at least 2 inches in diameter and is the length you need or longer. Cut the branch from the tree using your hack saw, or you may simply find a branch lying on the ground.

    • 3

Check for and cut off any sharp twigs that are jutting out of the branch so that your chickens will not be injured flying up to the perch. Cut the branch to the correct length for your specified area.

    • 4

Place one end of the branch against the side of the coop for attachment. If possible, have someone hold the other end of the branch to make it more level and easier to nail.

    • 5

Drive the first nail into the end of the branch against the coop. Use as many nails as needed to make the perch sturdy.

    • 6

Move to the other end of the branch and drive nails into that end to complete installation.
