Owning a Milk Cow

If you live on some acreage, you may consider buying a dairy cow. Owning a dairy cow provides fresh milk every day for your family. However, make sure you are prepared to care for your cow properly.
  1. Advantages

    • There are other advantages to owning a milk cow beside drinking fresh milk. There are many things you can use the milk for such as butter, cheese or yogurt. Milk cows typically produce around 30 pounds of milk a day, which may afford you the opportunity to sell some of your dairy goods.

    Feeding

    • The main diet of a cow is grass. Make sure the cow has a pasture to graze in. They also eat hay. One cow eats about 90 pounds of feed per day. Make sure you are prepared to meet her dietary needs.

    Shelter

    • Your cow needs to have some sort of a shelter so she can get out of the elements. Consider the climate you live in when arranging for a cow shelter. You may only need a covered stall for your cow if you live in a mild climate. However, if the area you live in has extremely cold winters, your cow will need a fully enclosed shelter.
