How do I Raise Rabbits at Home for Meat?

Rabbits are excellent for backyard meat production. They are quiet, small, won't disturb the neighbors or use up a lot of precious backyard space. Their meat is a high quality, low fat, delicious source of protein.
  1. Rabbits

    • The New Zealand rabbit is an excellent meat producer.

The best breeds for meat rabbits are the New Zealand and the California. Both breeds can weigh up to 10 lbs. at maturity and will be ready for eating eight to 12 weeks after birth. The Florida White is another favorite breed among home meat producers.

    Housing

    • Water on the outside of the hutch prevents spills.

Each rabbit needs a hutch. Plan on three to start with; one for each of the parents and one for the babies. They can be purchased ready made, or built at home. You can find free building plans online. Prices for ready made hutches start at $25. A wire enclosure where the animals can exercise for 30 minutes a day is also highly recommended.

    Food and Water

    • Fresh vegetables are the perfect food for your rabbits.

Water should be clean and available at all times. Ready-made rabbit food comes in the form of pellets. Most of these are nutritionally balanced, but can be high in calories. Rabbits also love vegetables, such as carrots, broccoli, beet tops, alfalfa hay, and even fruit. They will thrive on a balanced blend of pellets, vegetables and the occasional fruit.

    Rabbits vs. Bunnies

    • Food, water and housing requirements for meat rabbits are the same as for pet rabbits. Rabbits raised for meat do less socializing with their caregivers and bonds between them are not generally formed.
