How to Make Nesting Boxes for a Chicken Coop

When your chickens are about to lay eggs, they prefer to stay at one place and nest. While a tall grass or an old structure may be the perfect area to lay eggs, getting an exact place for your chicken coop is more ideal. You can make nesting boxes for a chicken coop in order to help you in the process of incubating chicken eggs and feeding your hens. Nest boxes can be created in any size, depending on how you want to group your chickens. You also have the option to create dividers for your nesting boxes.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a few galvanized nails and a hammer to nail the 1x2 lumber on the chicken coop̵7;s inside wall. See to it that the lumber is set 2 feet above the ground. Place your nails at the center of your lumber while keeping 1 foot of space in between each nail.

    • 2

Cut 10 to 12 inches of your PVC pipe with a rotary saw. Cut the pipe in half lengthwise while starting at one end and working your way to the other side. Keep a straight cut down the side of the PVC pipe.

    • 3

Use your rotary saw to cut the other side of your PVC pipe. This will give you two crescent pieces of pipe.

    • 4

Grab your hammer and galvanized nails and use these to attach the 1x2 lumber to the PVC pipe. Start by nailing the PVC pipe at the upper back edge of every crescent piece. This should be at least 1 inch from the top. Continue nailing the pipe to the lumber while observing a foot of space in between each nail.

Attach the pipes and the lumber on all the walls of your chicken coop. Add hay to your pipes to provide a comfortable nesting area for laying eggs.
