Ideas for Shelves for Bunny Cages in a Bunny Barn

The space of a rabbit barn is maximized by orienting rabbit cages vertically on shelves. If you are planning to raise rabbits and are preparing your barn, it is possible to avoid constructing elaborate wood hutches or shelves, which are expensive and time-consuming. Several simple alternatives will provide you with shelves that are durable, affordable and uncomplicated to build.
  1. PVC Pipe

    • A basic framework made out of polyvinyl chloride pipes will allow you to shelve the bunny cages by hanging them. The framework is built with columns of corresponding crossbars at the front and back. Two sections of small pipe that are slightly longer than the depth of the framework are pushed through the top sides of the cage. These pipes are then set on top of the cross bars to secure the cage in place. To join together pieces of PVC pipe to create your framework, use couplers, tees and four-way connectors. Glue all the joints together PVC pipe cement.

    Industrial Wire Shelving

    • Welded-wire shelves are basic, no-frills units that are commonly used for industrial or commercial storage. Homeowners also use them in their garages for storage. Wire shelves come unassembled and are erected by locking shelves onto corner posts. It is also possible to adjust the shelves to meet the height of your rabbit cages. Units are available at home improvement and construction stores.

    Planks

    • Use particleboard or plywood planks to make inexpensive shelves that require very little construction. One option to support the planks is using shelf brackets that screw to the wall. For easy shelf height adjustment, consider brackets that fit into tracks that are screwed to the wall. Alternatively, the planks can be supported within stacks of cinder blocks. In either case, the top sides of the planks that will be in contact with rabbit cages should be covered with linoleum to prevent moisture damage. If you want to paint or stain the shelves, only paint the sides that will not come into contact with the cages.
