How to Make Baby Rope Halters

Rope halters can be used to transport a variety of baby animals including cows, sheep and horses. The basic design of a rope halter is similar for most animals, and fits over the nose and around the back of the head to help control and guide the animal during transport. Rope halters are a cheap alternative to commercially made ones and can be accomplished with a minimal number of supplies.

Instructions

Hold the ends of the rope over a torch or candle to melt the ends. Melting the ends keeps the rope from coming unraveled while you work. Tie a large knot as close to one end of the rope as possible.

    • 2

Make a 6-inch long loop by folding the last 12 inches of the rope on itself. Wrap the loop around your finger, pushing the folded end of the rope through the loop to form a knot. Pull tightly on the rope to secure the knot.

    • 3

Form a second loop in the rope 12 inches above the first, tying another knot. This will make two small loops that rest on either side of the small animal's chin to help hold the halter on it's head.

Set the halter over the animal's head, with the loops meeting under the muzzle. Place the loose end around the head directly behind the ears, and feeding it through the loops to form the halter. As you walk the young animal, the rope will tighten up to help you control the animal. Unthread the rope from the loops and pull the halter off the head when you release it.
