Homemade Containers for Chicken Water

Chickens have been kept by humans for centuries. Valued for their eggs, meat and feathers, chickens have recently found favor as pets as well as farm animals. Chickens can be kept on relatively small properties and help control pests and weeds as they spend a good portion of their day eating. Keeping chickens is also fairly inexpensive, especially if you use items already found around your home to make supplies such as homemade water containers.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your 2 gallon bucket and planter base thoroughly. Add a few drops of soap to the bucket and base and fill with water, scrubbing the inside and outside vigorously with the sponge before rinsing with plenty of clean water. Allow the bucket and base to air dry completely.

    • 2

Set your bucket on a flat surface and place six evenly spaced marks around the bucket, approximately 3 inches up from the lip. These marks will be the areas that the water flows through, so space them as evenly around the bucket as possible for even water flow.

    • 3

Cut 1 inch diameter holes over each mark in your bucket. Hold the bucket on its side and press the knife through the plastic, cutting a small circle from the plastic. Remove the plastic pieces and discard them to keep your chicken from eating them.

Fill the bucket with water, pressing the lid onto the bucket to close it. Lay your planter base in your chicken coop and place your filled bucket upside down in the base. The water will filter through the holes to fill the base and will automatically refill itself as your chickens drink.
