How to Cut Saddle Pads

Saddle pads are a necessary component of tack for anyone that rides horses. A saddle pad provides valuable cushioning for the horse's back from the saddle while preventing the horse from conditions such as chafing. A saddle pad is typically made of several different components such as a durable top layer, a middle cushioning layer and a comfortable bottom fabric that provides a breathable layer for the horse. Cutting and making a homemade saddle pad is not that hard, it just takes some time and patience to put together.

Instructions

  1. Cutting and Making a Homemade Saddle Pad Takes Patience

    • 1
Use an old saddle pad as a guide.

An easy way to make a template is to use an old saddle pad as a guide for making your new saddle pad, but allow for a little extra in order to fold the seams under.

    • 2
Cut all fabrics carefully using the template.

Cut each of the durable and breathable fabrics according to the template, while making sure to cut the material carefully.

    • 3
Thick padding allows for more cushion.

Place the quilt batting or other stuffing material to the right consistency between the two fabrics. Note that you want it to be somewhat thick in order to provide for proper cushioning. Make it a little thicker than the old pad to allow for compression over time.

    • 4
Sew the three materials together carefully.

Quilt the three pieces of material as you would a blanket. An easy way is to sew the three pieces down the middle and then alternate from the middle out in in about two inch widths until the whole pad is securely quilted together. Make sure you keep the edges even while sewing each section.

    • 5
Add any additions such as embroidery.

Stitch the ends of the saddle pad and add any decorative additions you want such as initials.

    • 6
      Saddle pads must be durable.

The saddle pad will fit like a glove under the saddle with the durable fabric face up under the saddle and the soft breathable fabric next to the horse.
