How to Make a Fence With Hog Panels

Hog panels are a very versatile type of fence. Made out of thick galvanized steel, they install easily and last for years. You can bend a hog panel to fit any shape of fence you like. Hog panels are not only great for penning in pigs but they also make a sturdy cattle fence. You can use them with horses without the danger of injury you get with barbed wire. Hog panels come in 16-feet sections and unlike field wire it does not have to be unrolled.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the intended fence line with ground stakes. Put a stake in the ground every eight feet down the fence row. These stakes will mark the placement of your steel posts.

    • 2

Use the post driver to sink a steel post at least one foot into the ground at every stake. Make sure the fence clip notch on the steel post faces outward, away from the inside of the pen.

    • 3

Line up a hog panel with the steel posts. The panel should rest against the smooth side of the steel post. One end of the first panel should meet your first steel post in that row. The end of the panel will meet the third post, letting the second post hit the panel right in the middle.

    • 4

Start in the middle of the panel at the second post and attach the panel to the post using the panel clips. To do this place the U-shaped end of the panel clip under the clip notch on the steel post. Hook the ends of the clip around the panel and twist them tight with the fencing pliers. Use three panel clips for every post. Secure the ends of the panels to the other two posts in the same way.

    • 5

Repeat this with the remaining panels until you get to the desired length of fence line.

    • 6

Strengthen any corners you may have by tying them off with two six-inch pieces of fencing wire. One at the top and one at the bottom will do.
