How to Convert Prefab Sheds Into Chicken Coops

Prefab sheds can be converted into chicken coops with simple modifications. Chickens need water, feed, a sleeping arrangement and, if you want to produce eggs, nests. They also need to be kept so secure so predators can't get to them. You may need insulation and additional light for laying chickens. Your shed needs to be big enough to provide 2 square feet of space to each chicken if the chickens can go outside or 8 square feet each if they are confined.

Things You'll Need

  • Feeder
  • 1-by-2-inch lumber

Instructions

    • 1

Cut and opening to create a separate entrance for your chicken measuring 16-by-16 inches. Install a tamper-proof locking mechanism that can be secured at night and kept open during the day.

    • 2

Install a a window or vent you can install one. Take a window small enough to fit between studs so you do not weaken the structure by cutting studs. Add a 10-by-10 inch vent as the coop will be dusty.

    • 3

Install perches using 1-by-2 inch lumber for the chickens to sleep on. Install around 8 inches of perch space per chicken at different heights.

    • 4

Install the waterer and the feeder inside the coop next to the chicken door so the chickens drink enough. Spread the bedding on the floor of the coop.

    • 5

Install a supplementary light, if necessary. Put it on a timer to give your chickens 12 hours of light consistently. If you need to install insulation, cover it with OSB or another type of wood.
