How to Make a Sheep Lead Rope Halter

If you raise sheep, you will most likely need to be able to lead them somewhere at some point. It is possible to lead a sheep by holding its head, but this can be difficult if you are walking a long distance. You will want to have a halter on hand to lead your sheep around with. Purchasing one can sometimes be expensive, and because of the many types of sheep there are, store-bought halters don't always fit correctly. A more practical alternative is to make a simple one yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Nylon rope
  • Sharp scissors or knife
  • Lighter or matches
  • Metal loop

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the nylon rope around the nose of your sheep. Avoid wrapping too tightly, or it will become hard for your sheep to breath. Cut the rope where the end meets the rest of the rope. This will be the halter's nose piece.

    • 2

Shape the nose piece into a circle. Hold the two ends of the nose piece so they are touching. Using a match or lighter, melt the two ends together. It should now stay in a circle shape.

    • 3

Place the circle over your sheep's nose. Wrap the remaining rope from the left side of the nose piece, around the back of your sheep's neck behind its ears, and to the other side of the nose piece. Cut the rope, and you will have your neck piece.

    • 4

Remove the nose piece from your sheep. Place the neck piece through the metal loop. Melt the nose and neck pieces together. Position the neck piece the same way it was when it was around your sheep's neck.

    • 5

Put the halter on your sheep to make sure it is sized correctly. To do this, place the nose piece over the sheep's nose and slip the neck piece over and behind its ears.

Cut another piece of rope as long you desire your lead rope to be. Tie this rope onto the metal loop on the neck piece.
