  1. How to Grow Organic Chickens

    • 1

Set up your chicken coop in an area free from pesticides or chemicals and away from your house to prevent irritation from the chicken droppings. A good rule of thumb for housing chickens is five square feet per bird.

    • 2

Purchase your chicks as young as possible from a reputable breeder. You can pick up chicks as young as 2 or 3 days old from farmers and feed stores. Chickens do best when they are not lonely, so purchase a few chicks.

    • 3

Place heat lamps inside your coop, approximately eight inches from the ground. Young chicks cannot regulate their body temperature very well, so heat lamps are essential to keep them safe and healthy. One or two heat lamps will be adequate for a clutch of up to 20 chicks. Space the lamps out to allow all your chicks to have access to the heat.

    • 4

Use a long, shallow watering dish to provide all the chicks access to fresh water.

    • 5

Feed your chicks only all-natural, organic grains and fresh organic vegetables.

    • 6

Allow your chickens to have free range whenever possible. Free-range chickens are often leaner and healthier than pen-raised birds.
