Instructions
Locate a high and dry area in the cows' pasture to build the shed. Low areas will leave the shed filled with water and mud. Have a load of dirt hauled in if there is no high ground.
Measure out the desired size of the shed and mark four corners. Dig holes for the corner posts here. The number of cows using the shed determines the size. Cows stand together but won't pack in just to make room. A 12-foot by 24-foot shed is sufficient for about four cows.
Set the corner posts and refill the holes with dirt and cement. Add water to the cement and allow it to sit until the cement is completely hardened. This can sometimes take up to 24 hours.
Using 2-by-4 lumber, build a frame on three sides of the shed. This will be how the walls are attached to the shed. Make sure no nails are protruding; these can catch on the cows' hide and cause cuts and gashes.
Nail boards for the roof by nailing one board on each side of the top, nailing them to the corner posts. Go back and add a board every 2 to 3 feet across the top of the roof. This is where the tin will be attached. These boards also support the tin.
Install the tin on the top of the shed for the roof. Make sure to nail the tin down in every corner, down both sides and across the center so that wind cannot easily pull the tin off.
Add tin to three sides of the shed for walls. Unlike horses, most cows won't kick through the tin, so no plywood or siding is needed other than tin.
