- Internal fertilization occurs when the sperm and egg meet and fuse inside the female's body.
- Following ejaculation, sperm travels from the vagina through the cervix, into the uterus, and then the fallopian tubes.
- If an egg is present in one of the fallopian tubes, sperm can penetrate it, resulting in fertilization.
- The resulting fertilized egg, called a zygote, then implants into the lining of the uterus, where it develops into a fetus over time.
