What did the Elephant originate from?

The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) are the only two extant species in the Elephantidae family, which is a member of the Mammalia class, Proboscidea order, and Elephantidae family. This family first emerged around 55 million years ago, during the late Paleocene era. The oldest known ancestors of the elephants and mammoths were the early proboscideans such as Moeritherium, which was roughly the size of a pig and lived in Africa. As the climate dried up and the forests receded, the proboscideans evolved to become larger, with elongated noses that facilitated adaptation to the savanna landscape, thus leading to the diversification of mammoths and elephants.
