What attracts woodpeckers?

* Insects: Woodpeckers are insectivores, and they primarily eat insects that live in trees. Some of their favorite prey includes ants, beetles, grubs, and caterpillars.

* Fruit and berries: Woodpeckers also eat fruit and berries, especially during the summer and fall months when insects are less abundant. Some of their favorite fruits include cherries, apples, pears, and grapes.

* Sap: Some woodpeckers also drink sap from trees. They use their sharp beaks to drill holes in the bark of trees, and then they lap up the sap that flows out.

* Nesting sites: Woodpeckers need trees to nest in. They typically excavate cavities in dead or dying trees, and they use these cavities to raise their young.
