How to Hold a Hen

Picking up a hen is not the same as picking up a dog or a cat. Hens have sharp beaks and claws which makes the task of picking one up intimidating for certain people. However, picking up a hen is not impossible. Providing proper support and comfort is key in successfully holding a hen. You must move quickly and not harm the bird in the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Coax the hen toward you with chicken feed. Toss the chicken feed on the ground at your feet. This distracts the hen.

    • 2

Move to the side of the hen as she eats the feed.

    • 3

Bend down and pull both legs out from under the hen. Quickly place one hand on the chest of the hen.

    • 4

Place your free hand between the legs of the hen. This provides additional support and prevents struggling from the hen.

    • 5

Rest the hen between the crook of your arm and your side. This position keeps the hen in place while also providing her with full body support.
