How to Apply a Cattle Halter

Dairy cattle tend to be more docile than beef cattle, often because they receive more handling and are more accustomed to people. If you plan to show your animal, you should spend time with it daily to get it accustomed to your presence. It is less challenging to put a halter on a docile, well-mannered cow. Once the animal appears comfortable with the halter, practice leading it around with the halter's lead rope.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the cow in a small pen or chute to minimize its opportunities for escape. Offer the animal some food to keep it busy.

    • 2

Hold the part of the cattle halter with the lead rope in your left hand, leaving the nose piece open. Grasp the head stall in your right hand, which is the part of the halter that goes over the ears.

    • 3

Walk to the cow's left side. Arrange the chin strap underneath the animal's chin and guide the nose piece up its nose with your left hand. Locate the nose piece approximately 2 inches beneath the animal's eyes.

    • 4

Guide the head stall over the cow's head and behind its ears. For horned cattle, ensure that the head stall is behind the horns, as well as the ears.

    • 5

Tie the animal to a post with the lead rope at the height of its chin.
