What eats a European hedgehog?

European hedgehogs have a few predators, but their biggest threats are:

Natural Predators:

* Badgers: These animals are strong enough to dig hedgehogs out of their nests and consume them.

* Foxes: They are cunning and will often prey on hedgehogs, especially young ones.

* Owls: Some owls, like barn owls and tawny owls, hunt hedgehogs at night.

* Dogs and Cats: Domestic pets can pose a threat, especially if they are not supervised.

* Weasels: Weasels are known to be opportunistic predators and can attack hedgehogs.

Other Threats:

* Cars: Hedgehogs are often victims of traffic, especially at night when they are most active.

* Habitat loss: As human development spreads, hedgehog habitat is shrinking, making them more vulnerable to predators and other threats.

* Pesticides: Pesticides used in gardens and fields can harm hedgehogs, leading to poisoning and death.

It's important to remember that hedgehogs have natural defenses like their spines and ability to roll into a ball, which help them protect themselves. However, they still face significant threats in the wild.
