Do black bears hunt to get their food?

Black bears are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. While they are not primarily hunters, they do occasionally hunt for small animals like:

* Rodents: Mice, squirrels, voles

* Birds: Nestlings, eggs

* Fish: Salmon, trout

* Insects: Ants, grubs

* Small mammals: Rabbits, fawns (rarely)

However, the majority of their diet comes from plants:

* Berries

* Nuts

* Seeds

* Roots

* Shoots

* Grasses

Black bears are opportunistic feeders, meaning they will eat whatever is readily available and easiest to obtain. They are not typically aggressive hunters and prefer to find food that is already dead or easy to catch.

So, in short, black bears do occasionally hunt, but it is not their primary way of getting food. They are more likely to scavenge or eat plants.
