Coyotes are opportunistic predators and will eat a wide variety of food sources, including:
- insects and other invertebrates
- small mammals (rodents, rabbits)
- birds
- fish
- reptiles and amphibians
- plant material
- carrion
The diet of a coyote varies depending on the time of year and the availability of food sources. In areas where hawks are abundant, coyotes may prey on them more often.
Coyotes typically hunt by chasing down their prey and then killing it with a quick bite to the neck or head. They will also eat carrion, or the remains of animals that have been killed by other predators or by natural causes.
Although coyotes can eat hawks, hawks are generally not a significant part of their diet. Coyotes prefer to prey on smaller, more easily caught animals.
