How many calories do polar bears gain each day?
Polar bears do not typically gain weight each day. In fact, they may lose weight during certain times of the year when food is scarce. For example, during the summer months, when sea ice melts and hunting opportunities decrease, polar bears may go weeks without eating and rely on their stored body fat for energy. In the winter months, when sea ice returns and hunting opportunities improve, polar bears may consume up to 12,000 calories per day in order to build up body fat for the summer months.
