Here's why chipmunks don't hibernate:
* They store food: Chipmunks are very busy in the fall gathering and storing food in their underground burrows. They use this food to survive the winter.
* Torpor is more efficient: Torpor allows them to conserve energy during periods of cold or low food availability. They can enter and exit torpor more easily than true hibernators.
* Shorter periods of inactivity: Chipmunks don't stay in torpor for extended periods like hibernators. They might spend a few days or weeks in torpor before emerging to forage for food, especially on milder days.
So, while they do burrow underground to escape harsh weather and conserve energy, they don't truly hibernate like some other animals.
