How to Make a Ferret Cage Out of a Dog Kennel

Ferrets are lively, intelligent animals that belong to the weasel family. Many pet lovers choose ferrets because of their playfulness, but they're not suitable for everyone. Homes with small children or elderly family members may not be a good match for these domesticated animals. Ferrets need constant supervision, as they are curious creatures that can destroy your property. While at work or away from home, keep your ferret safe inside a kennel. An extra large dog kennel made from plastic-coated wire will stand up to the busy hands and gnawing teeth of the ferret.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wire top from the dog kennel. Turn the wire top upside down with the open bottom facing upward, toward you.

    • 2

Position a piece of wire screen 6 inches from the top of the cage. Leave a 4- to 6-inch gap at the end of the screen, so the ferret can climb up and onto the platform. Hold the screen in place by securing each of the four corners of the screen with a 3-inch piece of 20-gauge wire.

    • 3

Twist the 20-gauge wire pieces until the screen is secure. This will create a multilevel play area.

    • 4

Place a small litter pan, filled with fresh litter, on one side of the cage. Position a water bottle and food dish on the opposite side of the cage.

    • 5

Crumple up wads of newspaper and place them in the bottom of the cage. Hang a ferret hammock on one end of the cage, opposite from the litter pan, attached with twist ties.
