What is a bald shelter?

Bald shelter or Baldshelter is the largest underground manmade civil defence nuclear bunker in Wales. It is located within a sandstone hill just outside the village of Rhiwbina, north of Cardiff. It was built between 1952 and 1958 as a regional seat of government in the event of a nuclear attack. The shelter was designed to accommodate up to 2,500 people, including government ministers, local government officials, civil servants, police officers, and other key personnel. It also had a range of facilities, including: a hospital, kitchens, a canteen, a chapel, and even a cinema. The shelter was decommissioned in 1991 and is now open to the public as a tourist attraction.
