Provide cover and escape routes.
- Brush Piles – Piles of dead branches, limbs, and other vegetation can be good places for hiding, as well as for building nests when placed properly.
- Nest sites – Valley quail typically nest on the ground under shrubs or grass clumps 4 inches or taller and may select areas near brush piles for nesting cover. Provide areas like these close to an open area. They might also use cavities such as abandoned tree squirrel nests as nesting sites, so the more habitat the better chance there is that they might take up residence there.
