Ferrets usually move using a bounding gait. While using this gait, the back legs of a ferret are extended with every step, and the ferret's back arches. When ferrets are running, their feet leave the ground in the following sequence: hind feet, front feet, hind feet again. Their backbone flexes vertically when their hind feet are on the ground, but stiffens when all their feet are in the air. In addition, the ferret's tail helps provide stability while it is running by acting like a rudder.
Walking Gait
Ferrets also use a walking gait when their speed is very low. While using this gait, the ferret only lifts one foot at a time.
