How to Use Advantage Flea Control on Ferrets

Advantage, a common flea control product for dogs and cats, can also treat fleas on ferrets. It contains the active ingredient imidacloprid, which interrupts fleas' nerve transmissions on contact, leading to paralysis and death. It kills 98 to 100 percent of adult fleas within 24 hours of application. Advantage comes as a liquid that you can apply to your ferret's skin every month. Consult your veterinarian before using Advantage on your ferret.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove one tube of Advantage for smaller cats from the packaging. Twist and pull the cap to remove it. Hold the cap upside down and hold it against the tube opening to poke an opening in the seal.

    • 2

Hold the ferret still and part the hair on the back of its neck until you see its skin.

    • 3

Place the opening of the tube against the visible skin and squeeze the tube twice to release the solution onto the skin. The chemical will spread throughout the entire skin at the level of hair roots. It remains in the oily layer of the skin, providing protection against fleas for one month.

    • 4

Repeat treatment every month. Advantage kills only flea larvae and adults, leaving the eggs. Monthly treatments ensure that eggs die when they hatch and come into contact with Advantage.
