Why does the Ostrich kick?
The statement that ostriches kick is not accurate. Ostriches primarily use their powerful legs for running and defense. They have long, strong legs with two sharp claws on each foot. When threatened, ostriches usually run away at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour (80 kilometers per hour). However, if cornered or provoked, they may use their legs to kick or strike at predators. Ostrich kicks can be formidable and can cause serious injuries.
