Here's why:
* Pigs: Pigs have an incredible sense of smell, even better than dogs, and are naturally drawn to the earthy, musky scent of truffles. However, they can be difficult to control and are prone to eating the truffles they find.
* Dogs: Dogs, particularly breeds like Lagotto Romagnolo, French Brittany, and the rarer truffle dog, can also be trained to detect truffles. They are generally easier to train and control than pigs, and they are less likely to eat the valuable fungi.
While pigs were traditionally used for truffle hunting, dogs are now the preferred choice for their ease of training and better control.
