How to Make a Dig Box for Ferrets

You̵7;ll quickly discover that pet ferrets need a lot of toys, of all different sorts. They like toys that provide climbing, exploring, chasing and digging opportunities. The last could be messy if the ferrets decide your houseplants need some attention. A tidier alternative is to add a dig box to their toy selection. As with most ferret toys, it is cheapest to make this yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Acquire a cardboard or plastic box big enough to hold two ferrets. Storage boxes are ideal. Note that cardboard is less durable than plastic for this purpose.

    • 2

Cut a couple of ferret-size plastic holes near the tops of different sides or in the lid, if you want to be able to put the lid on while the dig box is in use, which reduces spillage.

    • 3

Fill the box with finely shredded newspaper, sand, or dried rice or peas to a few inches below the entrance holes.

    • 4

Replace the lid and position the box on a bare floor. Carpets can make cleaning up afterward a tedious task.

    • 5

Sweep up spilled digging material and put it back in the box once the ferrets have finished playing or you have returned them to their cage.
