How to Get Your Ferret to Wear a Harness

Ferrets love to explore the world around them, and teaching them to tolerate a harness allows you to take them outside. A leash attached to a harness restrains the ferret from dashing off or hiding from you. Before you can take your ferret out for walks, however, train your ferret to tolerate the harness and to cease struggling when it goes on. Doing this allows you to take your ferret out for some exercise while keeping it secure.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your ferret on your lap, talking to it and soothing it.

    • 2

Clip the appropriate section of the harness around the the ferret's neck.

    • 3

Give the ferret a treat and wait for it to calm down.

    • 4

Clip the appropriate section of the harness around the ferret's ribs.

    • 5

Give the ferret another small treat.

    • 6

Test the harness to make sure that it is not too tight. You should be able to slide a finger between the harness and the ferret's body.

    • 7

Allow the ferret to wear the harness for five or 10 minutes, watching it closely. If the ferret can get the harness off, the harness needs to be tightened, or it is too big.

Repeat the process every day until the ferret is used to the harness and does not mind when it is put on.
