What is scruffing a ferret?

Scruffing is a technique used to gently restrain a ferret by holding the loose skin at the back of its neck with your thumb and forefinger.

How to scruff a ferret

1. Always wash hands before handling a ferret

2. Approach your ferret slowly and in a calm manner

3. With one hand, scoop your ferret up from underneath their body, holding the chest to the neck of the ferret.

4. With the other hand, place your forefinger and thumb behind their head and gently pull the loose skin

5. Pull their arms and legs under the body and make sure they aren’t touching their neck.

6. Hold your ferret firmly but gently while you perform your desired task (for example, cleaning ears, giving medication).
