How to Get Ferrets to Stop Moving the Poop Tray

Ferrets may kick an unattached litter tray around their cage, the result being they defecate where the tray was rather than where it now is. This means you have a big and messy job when you clean out their cage. Trays specifically for ferrets usually have a means of attaching them to the sides of the cage. If you are using kitten litter trays or other plastic trays, add some holes yourself and secure the tray in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the tray from the cage. Throw out the litter substrate apart from a small amount of soiled material and wipe the tray clean.

    • 2

Warm the plastic of one side of one corner of the tray by holding a cigarette lighter flame a few inches away for a few minutes. Don't allow the flame to melt or burn the plastic; the plastic should be warmed just enough to make it less brittle and prone to cracking.

    • 3

Create one or two 1/4-inch holes with a strong, pointed knife such as a penknife. Push the knife from the inside of the box outwards and twist to form a hole big enough for your ties or wire to pass through easily.

    • 4

Repeat for the other side of the corner.

    • 5

Replace the tray in the ferret cage in a corner, with the holes next to either side of the cage.

    • 6

Secure the tray to the cage with twist ties or short lengths of strong but flexible wire.

    • 7

Refill the tray with your litter substrate and the small amount of soiled material.
