Instructions
Confine the ferret to a small area, it's cage would be an excellent place for litter training to occur. Place the litter box in the corner of the cage. Make sure to securely fasten the litter box to the bottom of the cage to keep the ferret from playfully tipping the litter over.
Watch the ferret very closely. When he is ready to relieve himself, he will raise his tail and back up into a corner. Once this action is observed, gently pick the ferret up, and place him in the litter.
Observe the ferret closely when he first wakes up. Generally, ferrets relieve themselves within the first 15 minutes of waking. If he does not display the signs of needing to relieve himself described in Step 2, gently place him in the litter at the end of the 15 minutes. She should relieve herself shortly after being placed in the litter.
Reward the ferret each time he successfully uses the litter box. He will continue to develop his litter skills just to get more treats. Sometimes ferrets will pretend to use the litter box just to get a treat and praise. This is perfectly acceptable since they are modeling the correct behavior.
Follow these steps for approximately one week, keeping a close eye on the ferret. If it's necessary to leave the ferret unattended, place her in the cage until someone is able to observe her again.
Place several litter boxes throughout the home. This way the ferret can easily find an acceptable place to relieve itself.
