How do you treat fairy rings?

Chemical Treatment

- Apply a commercial lawn fungicide containing propiconazole according to the package directions (typically 1 pint of fungicide per 1000 square feet of lawn). Do not water the lawn after application, so the fungicide has a chance to soak in.

- Wait at least 4 weeks, and then reapply if necessary.

- You may need to apply the fungicide again in the fall if the fairy rings reappear.

Cultural Treatment

- Cut the grass regularly, and remove the clippings. Do not compost grass clippings that have been cut from a fairy ring.

- Thatch your lawn regularly, and add compost or other organic matter to the soil to improve drainage and aeration.

- Water the lawn deeply and infrequently, so that the water penetrates the soil evenly and deeply.

- Apply fertilizer according to the soil test recommendations.

- Mow the lawn more often to reduce thatch build-up, and apply fertilizer twice a year to encourage vigorous growth.

- Aerate the lawn regularly, especially if it is compacted, to improve drainage and oxygen circulation in the soil.

Biological Treatment

- Apply mycorrhizal fungi beneficial bacteria to the soil around the edges of the fairy ring may help control it. Look for products that are labeled for this use.

- Apply the beneficial bacteria, and water according to the package directions.

- Wait at least 4 weeks, and then reapply if necessary.
