What is a banteng?

Banteng are bovines of the subfamily Bovinae. Two species currently living are native to Southeast Asia; these two belong to either the same species, Bos javanicus, or to separate ones:

* The Javan banteng (*Bos javanicus javanicus*): Found on the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali

* The Bornean banteng (*Bos javanicus lowi* or *Bos lowi*): Native to mainland Southeast Asia from Myanmar through Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and into Malaysia's peninsula; also Borneo as its name implies
