What is a least weasel?
The least weasel (Mustela nivalis) is the smallest member of the weasel family. It is a small, carnivorous mammal found in Europe, Asia, and North America. Least weasels have long, slender bodies with short legs and a bushy tail. They are typically brown or reddish-brown in color with a white belly. Least weasels are predators and feed primarily on small rodents, such as voles and mice. They are also known to eat insects, birds, and eggs. Least weasels are solitary animals and typically live in burrows or under rocks. They are territorial and will defend their territory from other weasels. Least weasels are active year-round and typically breed in the spring. Females give birth to a litter of 4-6 kits, which are born blind and helpless. Kits are typically weaned by 6 weeks of age and are independent by 3-4 months of age. Least weasels have a lifespan of 1-2 years in the wild.
