What does a polar bear hunt?
Polar bears are skilled predators that primarily hunt seals. Their main targets are ringed seals and bearded seals, but they will also hunt harp seals and occasionally spotted seals. Polar bears rely on their keen sense of smell to detect seals breathing through holes in the ice, known as "seal holes." They may wait patiently near these holes until a seal surfaces for air, then launch a quick and powerful attack. They will also stalk seals by lying in wait on ice floes or at the edges of open water. Although polar bears primarily hunt seals, they are opportunistic predators and may also scavenge on carcasses or hunt other marine mammals like walruses or even beluga whales. While they typically rely on sea ice for hunting, climate change and reduced ice coverage in the Arctic can impact their ability to successfully捕猎and obtain enough food.
