Determine the cause or triggers of your mare's heaves. Heaves are typically triggered by poor ventilation, dusty barns or hay, moldy hay or bedding and pollen. Mares need to be able to breathe easily and properly while in foal, so you need to make sure you have removed your mare from any situation that may be triggering heaves, well before you consider breeding.
Have your veterinarian thoroughly examine your horse and determine if she is in good enough health to be bred. Breeding a horse that is in poor health will cause complications for both the mare and the foal. Do not breed your mare, if your veterinarian recommends against it.
Select a stallion to breed your mare with. Make sure the stud horse has absolutely no history of heaves, as some horses may have a genetic predisposition to the condition. Arrange for your mare to be covered by the stallion. You will need to pay the stud fee and sign a breeding contract.
Have your mare covered by the stallion when she is in heat. If your mare is shipped to the stud farm for physical breeding, make sure the owners of the stud farm are aware of your mare's health history and can care for her safely, while she is with them. If you opt for artificial insemination, your veterinarian will handle the process for you.
How to Breed a Mare With Heaves
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, also known as Heaves, is a respiratory disease that affects horses and ponies of all breeds, ages and genders. Heaves causes horses to become less tolerant of exercise and experience symptoms; such as difficulty breathing and chronic coughing. Heaves is most commonly brought on by the situation a horse is living in, or allergens within the living area, such as moldy hay combined with dust and poor ventilation. You can breed a horse that has previously been diagnosed with heaves, as long as the situation has been brought under control by your veterinarian.
