How to Read a Pedigree for an Arabian Horse

When it comes to sporting animals, pedigree is vital. The pedigree of dogs is subject to strong scrutiny, and even more so for horses. Studying the lineage of a horse can lead to glory and riches at the race track. It is also important if you want to breed more championship caliber horses down the line. It is this careful study of a horse's family tree that led to the worldwide popularity of several breeds, including the Arabian horse. Here's how to read the pedigree of one.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by reading the name of the "subject horse" on the far left of the pedigree. This is the horse whose pedigree you are examining. Beside his registered name are his registration number, color and foal year.

    • 2

Read the next two horses immediately to the right of the "subject horse." These are the sire (father) and dam (mother) of that horse. The same details are also included beside their names

    • 3

Read the next set of horses to the right of the sire and dam. These are the grandparents of the "subject horse" and great grandparents respectively.
