Why Do Buckskin Horses Change Color?

Buckskin horses are decedents of the Spanish Sorraia and the Norwegian Dun. Buckskin is not just a color breed; many qualities are unique to Buckskins.

    • Persistence, dense feet and sturdiness are unique characteristics to Buckskins, which were the horse of choice in the American West for these reasons.

    Genetics

    • The genetics determine the hair color of a Buckskin horse. Buckskins have one creme gene instead of two. The lineage of a true Buckskin is from either Dun or Buckskin ancestry.

    Types

    • The genetics of the Grey and Roan Buckskin horses are what causes their hair to change color as they age.

    Considerations

    • Buckskin, Dun, Grulla, Red Dun and Brindle Dun are the only Buckskin colors eligible for International Buckskin Horse Association registration. Grey and Roan color Buckskins are not eligible for registration with the association.
