How to Obtain Thoroughbred DNA Sample

Part of the registration process for registering a thoroughbred foal is obtaining a DNA sample to submit for testing. The DNA is contained in the root head of the mane hairs.

      The Jockey Club will mail a pre-printed Registration Application and genetic typing kit to the address listed on the live foal report. The genetic typing kit includes a pre-addressed envelope in which you will be placing your sample.

      Have someone hold the horse securely. If this is the first time he has had his mane pulled he may object. Make sure the mane is completely dry.

      Your sample must include at least 50 strands of mane hair. The hair must have the root heads still attached. It is more comfortable for the horse if you don't take the sample in one step. Instead, isolate a small section of mane hair at a time, approximately 10 to 15 hairs. Run a clean mane comb up your hair sample until you get close to the top of the mane. Wrap those hairs around the comb and quickly pull the comb straight down. Repeat until you have a collection of mane hairs with root head attached that is about the diameter of a pencil.

      Peel back the label on the collection kit. Twist the mane sample tightly then place it underneath the label on the kit. Press the label back in place to hold the sample securely.

      Fold the kit in half with the hair sample towards the inside. Place that inside the pre-addressed envelope. Add the proper postage and place it in the mail.
