How often do female possums come on heat?
Possums do not have a heat cycle like other mammals, such as dogs or cats. Instead, they are induced ovulators, meaning that ovulation is triggered by the presence of a male. When a male possum mates with a female, he deposits a chemical called a pheromone into her reproductive tract. This pheromone causes the female to ovulate, and she will then give birth to a litter of joeys about 12 days later. Female possums can mate and give birth multiple times throughout the year, but they are most likely to do so during the spring and summer months.
