A Zebra's Natural Habitat

Zebras are black-and-white-striped members of the horse family native to the plains and savannas of Africa. These "ungulate herbivores," or "hoofed vegetarians" are powerful runners that have many natural predators.
  1. Zebra Habitat

    • The seven subspecies of zebra all live on dense grasslands and forested savannas. Their diet of grasses and low-lying shrubbery is plentiful in these areas. Zebras prefer open spaces so they can watch for predators while they graze.

    Zebra Survival Tactics

    • Zebras live in large herds in nature.

Zebras live in large herds that constantly survey for hyenas, leopards and lions. If a predator is spotted, the entire herd runs, making it difficult for a hunter to single out a specific zebra from the mass of mobile stripped animals. They can deliver a powerful kick or nasty bite when attacked.

    A Widespread Habitat

    • These wild horses are commonly found all over the plains of Eastern Africa. A herd of zebras can contain over 1,000 animals. Every individual zebra has a unique pattern of stripes, comparable to a human's set of fingerprints.
