Look first at the head. It should be have a broad forehead, large expressive eyes, a straight or slightly dished short face, large nostrils that can extend widely and "dinner-plate" jowls. The ears should be short and tip inwards and set wide apart. Mares' ears are slightly longer.

Next, observe the neck. It should come out of a well-angulated shoulder and display a fine arch. The top line of the neck should be longer than the bottom line. The stallion will display more crest than the mare or gelding. The neck is a sign of the breeds' nobility and should be a defining characteristic to the viewer.

The body should be compact and display incredible strength with a short back, close coupling, deep loins, broad flanks, barrel-sprung ribs, croup long with tail attached high and carried proudly. To have a weak, low or long back is a severe fault. Height will range from 14 to 15.3 hands, with some individuals over or under these standards.

Look closely at the legs. They should be very sound and strong. Cannons should be short, forearms long and the back legs should be absolutely correct conformationally. The Morgan was bred to be a working horse and perfect legs are an absolute necessity of the breed. Feet should be large and tough. The entire picture should be of a very beautiful, fine animal that still displays incredible toughness and strength. A mature Morgan, no matter its height, should provide a sturdy mount even for a large adult rider.

When looking at colors in the breed, note that all colors are accepted. Common colors are dark pigments--but popular colors are liver chestnut with flaxen and the dilute colors, such as cremello. The breed is known for its tractable disposition and smooth and comfortable gaits. It is also known for its amazing strength.
