How to Make Horse Treats

Crunchy and sweet, homemade horse treats are a surefire hit in any barn. Horse treats are easy and fun to make, but the best part of creating your own horse treats is watching your horse enjoy them later. Homemade horse treats also make great birthday and Christmas gifts for barn buddies.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix all dry ingredients (oatmeal, flour, salt and sugar) into a large bowl and blend thoroughly.

    • 2

Add your wet ingredients to your dry mix one at a time. Start with the vegetable oil and then add your shredded carrots or apples. The molasses will be the most difficult to blend in, but its thick, sticky texture will hold your horse treats together.

    • 3

Place the entire mix in the refrigerator and allow it to chill. This will make the mix easier to work with when you're trying to roll it into balls or flatten it to cut out shapes.

    • 4

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

    • 5

Roll the chilled mixture or dough into 1 inch balls using your fingers or two spoons. Place them 1 ½ inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. You can also try rolling the dough out flat and cutting out different shapes with cookie cutters. This recipe should make approximately 30 horse treats depending on the size of your cookies.

    • 6

Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until golden brown.

    • 7

      Let the cookies cool completely.

    • 8

Feed them to your favorite pony or place the horse treats in festive bags and tie them with bows as presents for your barn pals and their equine buddies. Store any extra treats in an airtight container.
