Beet pulp contains approximately 10 percent crude protein and 18 percent crude fiber, so it acts as both an energy feed for horses as well as a forage feed, like alfalfa. Manufacturers add molasses for taste and to reduce pulp dust created during production. Even though beet pulp contains very small amounts of sugar, some horse owners like to eliminate molasses in order to get the weight-gain qualities of the feed without excess energy. While molasses-free beet pulp is available for purchase, there are ways to get rid of molasses in regular beet pulp versions.
